Yuengling Porter
by erik lars myers
Brewer: Yuengling, Pottsville, PA
Style: Porter
Yuengling Porter might be the rock that shatters the glass of "Life's too short to drink cheap beer." Or maybe it's the exception that proves the rule. I don't know, but if you haven't had it, then you must go somewhere in the mid-Atlantic states and try some, for this beer is very good.
It's not as dry as other porters you'll drink, nor as strong in flavor. It doesn't really hit you with hops the way some porters can, and it doesn't really overwhelm you with that nice porter coffee-ish flavor. What it is, though, is mild and lovely.
Dare I say, it's like a glass of chic black silk. The aroma hints at the flavor lovingly, a shadow of what's to come. The flavor is light and dark all at the same time. It's the porter flavor, it's nice, but it's not huge. It doesn't bowl you over, it just lingers in your mouth and says, "Please, sir... may I have some more?" in a cute little British accent. What's best? It only gets better as it sits there in your glass. As the temperature in your glass rises, so does the flavor -- rising in depth (what? yeah.. go with me on this one) and complexity so that by the time you finish it, you're eager to have another.
Seriously - the fact that this beer is good only attests to the greatness that is America's oldest brewery.
