Dinkel Acker Dark
by erik lars myers
Brewery: Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu AG, Stuttgart, Germany
Imported by: Spaten USA
Style: Dunkel Lager
This beer was suggested to me by our own Patrick Clapp. Off the top of my head, I believe he used the worst "tasty: twice in succession, and I can't say that I disagree.
As a dark lager, I've had others with stronger flavors. This one is a mild brew, but good nonetheless. I'd go so far as to call it a cross between an Oktoberfest brew and a good dark lager.
Let me take you through it. It's got a nice dark brown color -- not quite the black you might expect with Dunkels, but not a light amber like, say, that Oktoberfest brew I was talking about. The aroma's just barely there -- no real hops or anything, just hints of the flavor wafting up -- it's almost a little caramelly on the nose.
The mouthfeel? Excellent. Nice and smooth. First sip comes in like a lager - crisp and clean. The malty Oktoberfesty flavor comes in next riding the back of the effervesence like a lazy surfer and finishes out with that faint caramelly/coffeeish flavor that's so nice in dark lagers.
If you like the darker brews definitely give this one a try. Spaten USA imports to pretty much everywhere, so it shouldn't be difficult to find in bottles.
