American Splendor
Metacritic.com: 92
My Score: 08/10
I know it's not a 09 or a 10, but I still have to recommend it. Go see it. It moves slowly and wanders around a bit, because it's the true story of a boring file clerk's life. But that's all that stands between it and a 10. That said, it's got some Oscar noms coming.
Paul Giamatti is a damn genius. And to think, they painted this guy blue for some stupid Disney movie (Big Fat Liar). I mean, where has this guy's acting ability been hiding all these years? He's been in like two dozen movies and a handful of TV stuff. Paul Giamatti at least needs a best actor nomination for his work in this movie. Without him, I wonder if the movie would have been as engaging.
So, go see American Splendor. It's sad, and it's happy, and it's moving, and it's annoying, and it's funny, and it's good, and most of all, it's all true. The honesty of all of the emotion is what really sells the movie.
Plus, dig the real Harvey Pekar. He calls everyone "cats" and talks all crazy. And I mean old-school crazy, like "groovy" and not that new jive stuff like "off da hizzle fo' shizzle".
