Happy Halloween?
by erik lars myers
Somebody answer something for me. When did Halloween become a cheerful holday? Halloween is All Hallows Eve, the day before All Saints Day, the day when evil roams the earth. It's the Day of the Dead, for Pete's sake. Traditionally, it's one of the liminal days, where the spirit world can touch our own.
I'm not saying people shouldn't have a good time -- I'm all for having a good time. I like to celebrate our nearness to the spiritual side of the universe. No. I'm wondering, when did Halloween get cheerful like this:
Ha-ha! The ugly lady with the floppy limbs is smiling at me!
What is this? Are we being attacked by jaundiced pilgrims at Halloween-time?
What happened to scary? What happened to creepy? What happened to ghosts and ghouls and goblins and skeletons and zombies?
Adult: None of that stuff is real.
Whoopdee-fucking-doo! That doen't mean we can't enjoy it! That doesn't mean we have to have crappo decorations like this:
Oooh.. it's a potion of candy!
The only people scared of this are dentists.
People, this is my call to arms for you! Stop cute from invading this holiday! Bring creepy back to Halloween! Teach today's children and adults to RESPECT Halloween! Not with razor blades and pins in their candy, but with FEAR!
My vow to you for my Halloween, I encourage you to join me:
- Lots of fog
- Lots of blood
- Lots of bones
- Lots of impalations
Anybody else have any suggestions? Let's see 'em in discussion.
