Peter Pan (2003)
by Demian Ginther
Just saw this last night with my girlfriend and 4 year old daughter... I have to say I was impressed with this retelling of a classic tale. Mary Martin's got nothing on this one.
The cinematography in this movie is nothing less than amazing, and the effects are very believable, though it suffers a little from the 'person swinging on a rope' syndrome during some of the flying...
This movie is quite a bit darker than any of the other Peter Pan tellings that have been put to the big or small screen, with many more undercurrents of sexuality. Tink's jealousy is played up quite a bit as well. I wasn't uncomfortable with my daughter seeing this movie at all, however.
I found myself wishing that they had found someone different to play Peter Pan, as the actor they chose was a little bit wodden and his line delivery failed to convince. Other than that, the rest of the cast put in good performances, including a really good performance by Jason Isaacs as Capt. Hook.
I would definitely recommend this movie to pretty much anyone but the smallest of children, as the scenes containing the alligator and some of the swordfights might be a little too much.
I would give this one a score of 4/5.
